How we work

All projects are unique, and based on our experience your design project doesn’t lend itself to a rigid repeatable formula. What we do have is a set of approaches that can be used in ways that are appropriate to your specific project. We’ll create a scope and engagement customised for your needs and work with you on an ongoing basis based on your milestones, budget and timeline. It starts with a clear understanding of what needs to be done and then carrying it through to a polished final product.

A cup of coffee or a call

Let’s have a quick call or a cup of coffee so we can get to know each other and you can give us a high-level picture of the challenges you’re facing and what you want to achieve. That will give us a pretty good idea of the overall shape of the mission we’re looking at, the size and velocity of your project and the different ways we can potentially work together.

Project foundation

This is where we get into the details of what exactly is involved in getting the project done. Depending on the size of your project this can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks and ranges from $5,000 to $20,000. At the end of the project foundation phase you’ll have a document that clarifies and outlines your project. It will include a work plan that addresses your milestones, measurable targets and enough detail that lets us get specific about timelines and fees.

Design / Build phase

This is the bulk of the project and we’ll be in constant communication throughout. Whether we start with strategy or further down the line we’ll work with you and your team on an ongoing basis. That can include research and experiments, building wireframes, storyboards and prototypes, through to pixel-level mockups and production deployed code. If we’re working on an agile project there are likely regular releases every two weeks, or more often with continuous integration projects.

In the case of the website we’ll be doing web development culminating with a launch and coordinating with all the other efforts you have to go along with making your website public. In the case of a product or app it would include design management: the production of assets and reviewing development.

The design phase can also include pitch decks, marketing materials or anything else we need to do to support the project.

Growth

With digital projects and websites the launch isn’t really the end; it’s a new beginning and the optimization phase is where we see if users are engaging with the project in a way that we had planned. We’ll stick around to run the experiments we need to get you to your goal as you continue to adapt to input from your audience to make sure you’re achieving the results you want.

Maintenance

For projects we develop we’re on board to make sure that you have what you need from security updates and minor site adjustments to content tweaks, requests for marketing materials, and even T-shirts for conferences or other swag.
